Magnesium Stearate, more popularly known as magnesium salt, is insoluble in water. The compound consists of a stearic acid anion and magnesium cation. It is formed by reacting two different compounds namely sodium stearate and magnesium sulphate.

One of the major uses of the compound is as a food additive owing to its high E number which is E470b.
A number of baby products contain magnesium stearate as one of the important ingredients owing to its excellent properties.
Bathtub rings are also said to have this compound which is prepared from hard water. It’s also called “soap scum” and very much in demand.
